HomeOwner Tips

4 things to check when your Air Conditioning Breaks Down!

  1. CHECK FOR ICE: If your system seems to be running inside and out but it is still HOT in your home, look for ice forming on the large copper pipe going into both the inside and outside units (Air Handler & Condensing Unit). If you confirm there is ice then there is one of 3 problems occurring. (1) The filter or coil is too dirty and is restricting airflow across the cold coil. (2) The system is low on Freon. (3) The system has a restriction in the Freon lines that is blocking the flow or refrigerant from flowing properly.
  2. CHECK YOUR BREAKERS: Locate your breaker panel and check if the Air conditioner / Furnace breaker is Tripped. If you flip the breaker and  it trips again immediately you probably have a grounded motor / Compressor.
  3. CHECK THE FLOAT SWITCH: Locate your Air Handler and look for a L shaped devise that is usually located at the bottom left of the Unit next to the drain pipe. pull off the top of the float switch and look for a collection of water in the reservoir. If water is present shop-vac the drain line and clear float switch reservoir of water. If none of the following fixes problem move to step 3 below
  4. CHECK LOW VOLTAGE FUSE:                                                                             WARNING BEFORE PERFORMING NEXT STEP TURN POWER OFF TO AIR HANDLER! This is where you may need to break out the old trusty tool bag. Remove screws holding top panel off of Air Handler. Look for a small square shaped 3-5 Amp fuse that usually is located above the blower fan on a control board. remove fuse and inspect for burn marks. If fuse is blown then replace fuse, put panel back on, turn power back on to the unit & try turning the system back on. If fuse pops again then there is a short somewhere in the low voltage and you may need a technician to come inspect the cause.

Other Common Causes for AC Breakdowns

  • Weed Wacker Madness: Did your Air Conditioning go out right about the time your lawn was mowed? Your lawn maintenance company may have accidentally weed wacked your low voltage wires going to your Condensing Unit. Locate your outside Air Conditioning unit and inspect your small low voltage wires to see if they had been accidentally sabotaged!
